Elvet Methodist Church resounded to the combined voices of 100 singers from Durham Choral Society and Durham Music Youth Choir and training choirs on 17 December. We have been organising a Christmas event since 2008.
Joining forces with other choirs, especially young voices, is always rewarding. Music brings us together and the ages of the singers ranges from teenagers to nonagenarians.
It is especially rewarding when we benefit others along the way. Profits from The Evening of Festive Music this year were just over £900 and have been donated to charity. Four charities have received support.
DCS’s chosen charity is County Durham Food Bank helping them to provide food for local people families respectively by providing food. This comes in addition to our members supporting The Soroptimists’ collection earlier in the season by donating food and more for Feeding Families.
Elvet’s nominated charity, Mary’s Meals, which provides nutritious meals in schools in countries around the world received a donation.
Durham Music Trust, which encourages young people to get involved in music, also received a donation.
Durham Choral Society is a charity and the remaining monies have been retained to support members who wish to sing with us but struggle to pay the membership subscription.
