[Testimonial from a past
Member]
I have had a wonderful 18
years as a member of the choir - it has been a real joy to sing such a wide
repertoire with you - thank you for that and thank you to all my fellow
choir members who have been so kind and supportive in recent years. Good
luck and keep up the good work. |

14th March 2012 I am back (
for those of you who bury your heads in your vocal scores I've been away
just in case you hadn't noticed ! ).But seriously my thanks to George and
Michael for stepping into my shoes - I am most grateful.
So, I reckon we have 10 rehearsals left until the end of the season if
I include the one in Holy Week which I have pencilled in because I think
it might be needed. We need some preparation for St. Giles. It's
frightening how fast time flies when you get to my age ( answers on a
postcard - on second thoughts don't bother - life's too short ! ).I hope
you will agree a lot of work has yet to be done.
This week we need to progress with the Bach from bar 79 and the Elgar
from page 46 as priorities.
Apparently some members are confused about the works for St. Giles and
May 19th - nothing to panic about - not too much difference - 'cos that's
the way I planned it. There will be info. sheets to look at on Wednesday
rehearsals so that you will know which music you require.
My thanks to all those who sang in the student conductors' workshops -
apparently they went well.
Newcastle C-Society - it appears they want to put all singers' names on
the programme. If there are any changes will you please inform me by
Wednesday, please.
Early warning - we can't rehearse in the Johnston on March 28th it has
emerged - please watch this space for updates.
I look forward to hearing you all in good voice on Wednesday.

19/2/12 |
22nd February 2012 This
week I intend to rehearse the Haydn, Brahms ,Bach bars 64-79 and further
if time permits and revisit the opening sections bars 1 -63 plus Elgar
pages 26 - 40 and onward again if time permits- so not too much to concern
you !
Reminder 1 - Student Conductors' workshop - short rehearsal during the
interval in the music room down the corridor - copies available.
Reminder 2 - Verdi Requiem Newcastle C.S. your last chance to sign up
this week if you wish to sing in this performance.
Look forward to hearing you in good voice this Wednesday.
|
10/2/12 |
8th February 2012 First, a
reminder no rehearsal next week - we meet again on the 22nd. when I intend
to rehearse the following - Haydn, Brahms and Bach -bars 64 onwards at
least to 79 if not further plus run through of earlier pages ,Elgar -pages
26 - 40 at least plus run through of the earlier pages.
Half-term Homework - homework is going to form an essential part of our
progress to May 19th.underpinning our work in rehearsals - I admit to
setting you a lot to learn because I want to prove amongst other things
that DCS can perform music of any period without problem ! Over to you !.
Newcastle C.S performance of Verdi - if you haven't already signed you
need to do so on Feb.22nd please as a last chance.
Last Wednesday I forgot to say goodbye to Viviane Lanctot, one of our
enthusiastic sopranos who is returning across the channel - thanks for
your commitment and best wishes - I am sure you will keep singing
somewhere with the same effort and musicianship !
Best wishes to you all - BUT half-term these days is not a holiday it's
time for homework !
|
3/2/12 |
3rd February 2012 My thanks
to Harry and his team for their sterling efforts last Wednesday - I reckon
between them they issued 400 + scores in half an hour ! A magnificent
achievement. All you've got to do now is learn it all ( and there is still
one more piece to come ! ).Just in case you haven't already sussed this
the most challenging pieces I think will be the Weelkes, Bach, VW and
Elgar - so, no problem there !
Evensong - reminder next week 6.p.m. in the cathedral - meet at rear of
the nave. After Evensong on the 14th. some of us are moving on to the
Bishop's Mill ( down the steps at the rear of Millenium square on the left
) for sustenance. If you would like to join us and there are sufficient
numbers I shall try and reserve some tables for us. Please let me know
next week.
Student Conductors' Workshop - one rehearsal at halftime on the 22nd in
the music room, please.Any more Elijah copies will be welcomed.

30/1/12 |
25th January 2012 WOW !
That's what my dear friend Keith Wheatley, sadly no longer with us, would
have exclaimed at the end of last Saturday's concert. I shall say a bit
more on Wednesday but for now - well done everybody !
Should you wish to sing the Verdi again soon we have been invited to
join Newcastle Choral Society in their performance on March 24th in
Newcastle Civic Centre - more info. later.
Musicmakers - I have 2 secondhand vocal scores for sale - one at £5 and
one at £3.
Reminder - Evensong rehearsal on Thursday in Elvet.

18th January 2012
Following on from Madam Chairman's email last week's rehearsal was mostly
impressive ! Confidence is abounding although I have yet to enjoy seeing
some faces ! So, we are set fair for a good run-up to next weekend's
concert which, I hope, you all like myself are looking forward to. I know
a lot of the orchestra are. So, Wednesday rehearsal as usual - Friday
night please meet in the nave before 7.30 so that we can all be in place
for a prompt start at 7.30p.m. Friday night is orchestra night so be
prepared for me to ignore you at times ! Also be alert to my baton and NOT
the orchestra!
|
14/1/12 |
11th January 2012 Another
good rehearsal last Wednesday, I thought, with confidence increasing page
by page accompanied by significant dynamic contrasts and blend. But !
Still work to be done however and tickets to be sold - let's keep the
momentum going ever forward and upward !
Evensong rehearsal - a lot of progress made by those who were there !
It's the 22 members who weren't there who worry me. If you have signed up
but now can't sing Cathy Tarn and I need to know sooner rather than later
-please ! Also I announced that the rehearsal on Feb 9th will now be in
the cathedral at 6.00p.m.Please note and make every effort to be there
-it's important.

6 December 2011 Some useful
work done last night with problem areas being identified and addressed but
still a lot of work to be done I am sure you will all agree. But we will
get there - I feel we are on schedule at this time.
Next week I shall look at the Sanctus again, Libera Me and pages 179 to
192 plus any others sections that are brought to my attention !
Christmas concert
Carols chosen last night - 16-Infant Holy, 23-Coventry Carol, 25-O
little one sweet, 41-Shepherds' Farewell.
Re Sarabande Carol - after discussions with Les about page 3 next week
I want to try the following - altos to sing first tenor and all tenors to
sing second tenor.
At the risk of becoming boring - tickets need pushing for the Xmas
concert and Jan.28th.!
Look forward to hearing you again at the Johnston,

30 November 2011 First and
most important next week's rehearsal is in Elvet Methodist church - if you
know someone who doesn't get these emails please inform them a.s.a.p.
Last night was an important rehearsal - a complete run through to see
how we have progressed so far. I was generally pleased with no.1 Requiem
and no.2 Dies Irae which we sang in the first half. From then on things
were less secure particularly the 2 big choruses so we need to look at
those in more detail I think. We have 3 half rehearsals left this term and
4 complete ones in January so no need to panic as long as your attendance
is as close to 100% as possible ! If you have specific concerns about
particular sections please tell me !
A reminder about selling tickets - again ! The Verdi concert is going
to be very expensive.
Carols at Newton Hall - cancelled - sorry - not enough numbers.
Signing up for concerts - some members don't know where to sign up
apparently - there are columns on the attendance boards - if you can't
find them ask Cathy Tarn please..
Verdi programme - we intend to put members' names on the programme this
season. We need your permission so please initial the sheets next week or
cross out if you don't want to be included.
Hospital carols - sheet is now available at rehearsal.
Attendance boards - I hope everybody has signed up for the concerts
they are going to sing in i.e. Xmas, Verdi and Evensong - it's very
important we have accurate figures. University Hospital carol sign up
sheet available this week.

20/11/2011 |
23 November 2011 First of
all I must put on record last Friday's Golden Jubilee dinner - what an
excellent night ! A wonderful turn-out produced a warm, very friendly and
bubbly atmosphere. I wanted to talk to everybody but there wasn't enough
time so my apologies if I missed you. I am sure you will all join me in
thanking Janet for organising such a successful occasion.
But to more serious matters - this week I aim to sing right through the
Verdi ,checking on various points as we go so you WILL need a pencil.
Tickets - now is the time to be selling tickets for the Xmas concert
and even the Verdi as well. We are in competition with at least 3 other
carol concerts so do not delay !
We have been invited to sing at the Kitchen, Alnwick Rd. Newton hall on
Friday,Dec16th from 6 to 8.It's very late notice and I suspect many
members will be otherwise occupied but if you want to sing please sign up
this Wednesday which is the deadline.
Warning reminder- Nov.30th - public sector strike is still on as I
write so do check before setting off on that day where we are singing.
Attendance boards - I hope everybody has signed up for the concerts
they are going to sing in i.e.Xmas, Verdi and Evensong - it's very
important we have accurate figures. University Hospital carol sign up
sheet available this week.
|
11/11/2011 |
16 November 2011 Another
very encouraging rehearsal last week, I thought. Significant progress over
the evening and some very sensitive and at times also some lusty singing
which is what the Verdi requires at particular points !
Next week Simon Fidler intends to look at pages 1-8 as requested plus
the Lacrymosa section pages 91 - 105 and, if time, the Dies Irae. I intend
to tackle the following if time permits - pages 179-192,175,154
-161,85-89,56-70,34-37,44-49 but not necessarily in that order
Tickets - time again to remind you all - you all are our main ticket
sellers ! Do not leave it too late to sell some, please. The Christmas
concert - we are up against stiff competition - at least 3 other similar
concerts before ours. Targets - please try and sell at least 3 for the
Xmas concert and 4 for the Verdi in January. The Verdi will cost us a lot
!
Nov.30th - possible public sector strike which may mean the Johnston
school will not be available - I have provisionally booked Elvet Methodist
church in case. Please check nearer the time.
Evensong - still could do with more 2nd sops. plus basses ! I'm still
trying to get copies of responses by Smith of Durham ( satb). Any
suggestions appreciated.

9 November 2011
You should have received a calendar of events, rehearsals and concerts by
now. Any queries please refer to me. You will also find the
Rehearsal Schedule on the Website,
under Members.
This week we welcome Michael
Summers - he will rehearse pages 1-8 and pages 22-36. I will attempt to
cover as much of the following as I can in the second half -pages
9-21,34-37,40-49,56-70,85-89,154-161,175,179 -192,203 - end.
Look forward to hearing you on Wednesday !
|
30/10/2011 |
2 November 2011 At this
week's rehearsal we shall welcome Rebecca Coulson who will direct the
first half. In the second half I shall aim to cover as much of the
following as time allows - pages 22-37, 40-49, 85-89, 175, 179-192.
The next 4 months are going to be a challenge ! We have 2 more
applicants taking rehearsals this month, the Christmas concert to prepare,
carols at University Hospital, Evensong to prepare, the Verdi to perform
in January, the student conductors' workshop at the end of February. I
intend to produce a rehearsal outline later this week so everybody knows
exactly what is going on in each rehearsal and there will be copies on
display at each rehearsal.
Look forward to hearing you in good voice on Wednesday !
|
14/10/2011 |
19th October 2011 A very
productive and therefore very encouraging rehearsal last Wednesday I
thought. Strong, confident singing accompanied by occasional eye contact -
all very indicative of the progress we are making. The bass entry at
fig.27 was so electric such that it wouldn't allow me to get to sleep
later on ! Let us not become complacent however - there is a lot of work
yet to be done to get us to where we need to be - an inspiring and
unforgettable ( for the right reasons ) performance.
Next week Mark Anyon will take the first half of the rehearsal. He will
rehearse pages 1-9 and the Libera Me section from page 193. Please make
every effort to be in your seats by 7.25,give him a warm welcome and thank
him at the end of his session. Please be sure to collect an assessment
sheet from your section leader, fill it in and return a.s.a.p.
Please remember to fill in the top and read the instructions
carefully....well, fellow colleagues in education will know there is
always someone who.......................!
For those who may not know the other 3 candidates will appear as
follows - Rebecca Coulson Nov.2nd.,Michael Summers Nov.9th. and Simon
Fidler on the 16th.Nov.
Thanks to all those who contributed to George Hetherington's birthday
present - I shall be making a delivery to him next Wednesday.
I intend to rehearse next Wednesday in the second half. As much of the
following as we can get through - pages
22-37,40-49,85-89,154-161,175,179-188,189-192.
Finally, it's not too early to think about ticket selling - this is
going to be a very expensive concert so.............!
|
9/10/2011 |
11th October 2011
As I write I intend to work on the following - pages 56-70,91-105 and 189
to the end but not necessarily in that order! Things might change between
now and Wednesday so if they do I shall inform you. Best wishes and
looking forward to hearing you on Wednesday,
|
22/9/2011 |
28th September 2011 Concert
at St. Giles - we need more singers in all sections but particularly
tenors and basses. Next week is the deadline for a decision to be made !
Evensong - numbers okay but room for more if you haven't signed up yet.
Interviews for my successor - next Tuesday and Thursday. A short list
of applicants will be invited to take half a rehearsal on 1 of the
following dates-Oct 12 and 19,November 2,9 or 16.Members will be asked to
complete a questionnaire on each. Important that we have punctual starts
and a warm welcome and support for all applicants, please.
University Student Conductors' workshop - we have been invited to sing
on 2 dates next year - Feb.28 and March 7 because of an increase in
student numbers - more later in the year.
Cathy apologises to new members for the delay in setting up email
contacts.
Next rehearsal - will be split for the first half with all the tenors
and basses in the music room and all the sopranos and contraltos in the
main hall to rehearse the final Libera Me -page 193 to the end. In the
second half I want to work on pages 56-70 , 91 - 105 , 189 - 192. I look
forward to continuing the good progress so far !
|
20/9/2011 |
21st September 2011 Sorry
this is late. We shall begin as last week with a split rehearsal - second
choir in the music room, please - sorry it's a bit of a squash. After the
interval and a run through of the Sanctus I intend to look at the
following - no.1 Requiem and Kyrie Eleison, number 2 pages 22-37 and 56-70
- if time number 7 pages 189-192 and the final section 193 - end.
Evensong - I think some members have signed up twice ! If you signed up
last season you didn't need to sign up again this season. If you have done
this will you delete your name from sheet 5 please.
|
16/05/2011 |
14th September 2011 An
impressive start to the new season I thought when we were able to sing
right through the Verdi despite it being new to so many of you !We've lost
a number of long-serving members over the summer but it was good to
welcome so many new faces to replace them. Two matters I want feedback on,
please. Firstly I 'd like to perform Tavener's The Lamb again at Christmas
- I know we've sung it twice before but I'd like another crack at it ! I
shall ask members next Wednesday for their views. Secondly many of you
will know that we have been invited to sing at St. Giles church as part of
their 900th anniversary on either April 21st or 28th next year. It won't
require any extra rehearsals because I shall re-cycle pieces from our
other concerts this season. There will be lists for members to sign up on-
deadline is the last rehearsal this month Sept.28th,please.
A reminder about next week - 2nd choir in music room, please, for the
first half of the rehearsal -to tackle the 8 part sections, notably the
Sanctus.
|
16/05/2011 |
18th May 2011 So - firstly
- last week's concert - I said - a thoroughly satisfactory evening's music
- despite most of the music being new to yourselves and the audience you
sang with confidence ( unlike Jan. ! ) good blend, accuracy and tight
ensemble. I particularly enjoyed the J.Haydn where the dynamic contrasts
and balance between orch. and choir were just right. Our chamber orchestra
excelled themselves, I thought, with string tone particularly impressive
and brass equally impressively restrained. Mention was made of James' and
Tom's very special contributions to the evening. Soloists performed well
especially in ensemble. This concert provided a fitting contrast to the
twentieth century music of Jan.'s concert -more new composers and new
works - as ever I like to ring the changes each season. I am amazed to
discover we have performed the works 0f 30 different composers since the
start of the new millennium ! If there is a downside to this season it is
the size of our audience - last week just under 300.I'v always believed
DCS deserves a minimum audience of 400 for each concert - how do we
achieve this ? I don't know.
Next season - we need new voices in ALL 4 parts BUT especially in
basses and tenors - the Verdi has lengthy 8 part sections.
Thanks - to all the committee for their unstinting efforts and support
- to you all for your commitment, loyalty, musicianship, friendship and
concert performances.
Dates to confirm for next season - Start of new season Sept.7th
Evensong Feb 14th Dinner May 25th
Enjoy your summer - look forward to seeing you all with a new member in
September !
|
16/05/2011 |
18th May 2011 An
encouraging rehearsal last week, I thought- good ensemble ,enthusiastic
and committed effort by all plus some very sensitive and mostly accurate
singing.
So, what next ? We are now ready to produce a performance of which we
can be proud. Remember what I said a few weeks ago - particularly
important as my potential successor may well be in the audience ! You have
to impress !
Plus - Tickets still need to be sold plus ,pencils still required for
rehearsal next week !
Reminder re rehearsals this week - Wednesday as usual, Friday 7.30 meet
in the nave, Saturday 1.30p.m.
Good news for M. Haydn yellow copies - you do not need to erase your
alterations after the concert.!
|
08/05/2011 |
11th May 2011 A good,
productive workout last week I thought - all 3 works progressing well but
-there's always a but ! - the Michael Haydn needs most attention I'm sure
you will agree - so
Next week I shall rehearse in reverse concert programme order - i.e.
start with Michael Haydn. If you still need to copy from the yellow master
copy you will have seen that it is currently with Janet Ball.
Tickets ! We need/deserve an audience ! You provide it ! Sooooo.......
Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday,
|
02/05/2011 |
4th May 2011 With their
choice of Parry and Rutter I hadn't realised that Will and Kate ( as they
were then known ) had attended our January concert until last week's
wedding service ! Pleasing that DCS chooses the repertoire that others
then follow !
Seriously though we now have 3 Wednesday rehearsals left to fine tune
our performance. Please make every effort to attend all of them. Yellow
copy holders particularly need pencils to add changes of dynamic to the M.
Haydn but also everybody else as well I think, needs to be able to mark
their copies as I require. .
Tickets need to be sold - if you want a target how about 3 per member ?
Pleasing to note that the Albinoni Adagio for Strings and organ jumped up
to number 49 this year in the Classic FM top 300 - a selling point maybe -
James Lancelot will be playing the solo part.
Hetton Good Friday Messiah - my thanks to the 22 DCS members who sang
and contributed to a very special night.
Looking forward to a contrasting programme from our January performance
but very special end of season concert.
We intend to move into Cathedral seating mode this week so be prepared.
Look forward to hearing you all in good voice this Wednesday |
17/04/2011 |
20th April 2011 I know DCS
has produced some startling performances in its time but causing a 1 1/2
hour power cut must be a record of some kind ! Seriously though, we have 4
rehearsals left and a lot of work yet to complete and tickets to sell
please ! This week I intend to sing through the whole concert programme in
concert order i.e. Albinoni, J. Haydn and M. Haydn. Reminders - members
with yellow M. Haydn copies need to get all the alterations to notes and
words completed soon. I will have a master copy available on Wednesday.
Cathedral evensong, Feb. 2012 -if you are able to sing and have not yet
signed up can you please do so this Wednesday-numbers are looking
encouraging with the exception of the basses !
My thanks to Jean again for taking last week's truncated rehearsal and
to Janet for organising yet another very successful raffle and to members
for their generosity in providing prizes. Look forward to seeing you on
Wednesday for a hopefully incident-free and productive rehearsal. |
| |
|
10/04/2011 |
13th April 2011 Another encouraging rehearsal last week, I thought. My opening anecdote
about not watching the conductor seemed to pay dividends - I saw faces I
haven't seen for decades ! And the resulting sound was so much more
positive and moving. Bad news though - the basses sat themselves well the
previous week but last week reverted to their disparate space dominated
assorted group which does not work ! Please, basses you need to be in rows
5,6 and 7 in a block.
Next week we shall start with J. Haydn, move on to Albinoni and, if any
time left, look at the last sections of the M. Haydn.
Tickets - are now available I think from Maureen. These will not be
easy to sell because 3 of the 4 works will be unfamiliar to a potential
audience although the composers should be except M. Haydn so you have to
persuade whoever that the quality and performance of our programme should
not be missed !
My thanks to Janet for last night's very successful annual dinner - as
ever a very pleasant and enjoyable occasion.
And don't forget the raffle draw next week !
5 rehearsals left - a lot to cover yet - so please be there !
|
3/04/2011 |
6th April 2011 Another
productive session I thought last week - so, next week I intend to start
with the Michael Haydn again but this time from the beginning -so I hope
those of you with yellow copies have all got the additions to bars 51-54
in place in the Kyrie ! I hope to sing right through to the end of the
work, then - if time allows go on to the Albinoni and part of the Little
Organ mass . Yellow copies - additional note change for sopranos -Agnus
Dei -bar 11 3rd note should be Eb, bar 20 3rd note should be F.
Yellow copies- word changes - there are quite a few - so suggest you
change a few at a time over the next few weeks. Dies irae -bar 102-115 -
tenors and basses should sing same words as sopranos and altos above. 255
- 278 - Amens need to be changed in several bars. Domine Jesu -bar 9-13
altos 24 - basses Quam olim - sops - 24-29,38-42 altos 17.37-42 tenors -
11-15 basses - 8-9,39-42 Hostias - repeat of quam olim on page37 is
identical note-wise to above- so no need to change words, just go back to
above ! Sanctus - no change - yet ! Benedictus - as above Agnus Dei - as
above Cum Sanctis - sops - 33-44,67-92,89-97,100-106 altos -
18-28,30,32-40,55-56,59-65,70-71,74-82,89-97,100-106 tenors- 41-42,103-106
basses - 8-10,33-34,39-43,50-56,68-83,89-106 repeat on page63 is identical
so go back to page 56.
|
15/03/2011 |
9th March 2011 An
encouraging rehearsal last week I thought - confident singing appearing
from time to time - plus good blend and ensemble. Or was it my return from
the Canaries that put me into such an unusually positive mood ? !
Anyway, next week I shall start with J. Haydn - just the Kyrie - move
on to Albinoni and then work through the M. Haydn backwards, and see how
far we get.
For those members who weren't present last week - you may or may not
know of my wish to sing Evensong in the cathedral as part of our Golden
Jubilee celebrations. There are now on display at rehearsals voice section
sheets for you to sign up for this event - they contain all the info you
need to know .The closing date is April 20th. our last rehearsal before
the Easter break.
Look forward to seeing you next week,
|
14/02/2011 |
16th February 2011 Firstly
for those members who were unable to be present last week I had this to
say re our last concert. It was hard to believe that we had been
rehearsing for close on 5 months 2 weeks before the concert because the
Rutter was in such a mess ! Yes, we got away with it on the night but I
don't want to go through a repeat of that experience ! So I make 2
requests - that members regard the two thirds attendance requirement as a
minimum not a maximum target to aim at - secondly , that music is looked
at between Wednesday rehearsals so that everyone is prepared to work and
learn it more quickly and we can spend more time on fine tuning it. We all
need to be on top of our music by the concert night so that I see rows of
confident faces focused on me rather than buried in books - please !
Following on from that , bearing in mind the advert for my replacement
will have gone out before the next concert it may well that hopeful
applicants will be present in the audience! I want them to see and hear
you at your very best which is what we should aim at for every concert.
Student Conductors' Course - there will be a rehearsal next week ( the
only one !) during the halftime break in the music room - music will be
provided - we could do with a few more ,particularly tenors.
Half term - reminder no rehearsal on Feb 23rd.
Next week - shall work through as last week - J. Haydn, Albinoni, M.
Haydn. Sorry that some of you had to share copies last week - hoping some
more will appear in time for next Wednesday.
|
23/01/2011 |
26th January 2011
Significant progress made last week, I thought, with some black holes
disappearing, others turning grey and some a "whiter shade of pale" ! But
still there is work to do. These are my main concerns in the Rutter -
- no.1 - pages 12-13
- no.3 - page 39
- no.4 - page 44 top; pages 46-47
- no.5 - page 58 - 60
- no.6 - page 69
- no. 7 - page 75 - bottom; pages 79 - middle
If you have others please let me know before Wednesday's rehearsal.
This Wednesday we sit in cathedral formation please. Last week's seating
was a valuable exercise if only to expose the problems we have when
members either do not sign up for a concert or give the wrong info ! It's
so important that we know of any changes a.s.a.p.
Next weekend - reminder
Friday - please assemble in the nave at 7.30 and wait quietly please as
I shall be rehearsing the Four Last Songs.
Saturday - please be in your places for 1.15 prompt - again assemble
quietly because there may still be a service taking place in the north
aisle. Rehearsal order - Parry, Barber, Rutter, Strauss. I expect the
choir to be finished by 2.45 approx - please leave quickly and quietly so
I can get on with the Strauss. If you can spare the time I recommend you
sit in the nave to listen to the Strauss - a rare treat ! Meet in the
Chapter House as usual at. 7.00 for a 7.30 start.

15/01/2011 |
19th January 2011 Shall
concentrate on the Rutter Magnificat working through from the
beginning. One additional section to highlight - pages 10-11 because it is
largely unaccompanied ! But need to finish with the Parry and Barber.
Reminder - we intend to go into cathedral formation after the halftime
interval therefore it is VITAL you have indicated your intentions at the
beginning of the rehearsal ( if you haven't already done so) so that we
have accurate figures to work on.
Tickets ? Need I say more ?

19th January 2011 An early
communication because last Wednesday's rehearsal was a cause for concern -
for some sections more than others but a distinct worry with only 2 weeks
to go before our concert. So, I am sending you my concerns now in the hope
that you will find time to look at the problems I have identified below
before next Wednesday. You can find the Barber and the Rutter on the
internet. No panic - I have every confidence the performance will be up to
our normal standards but homework needs to be done in the next few days by
one and all. So, -
Barber
3 main problem areas - bottom of page 3,page 6 and bottom of page 9 to
top of page 10.
Rutter
1 - page 5 bottom line, page 7
page 12-16
3 - page 39
4 - page 41 last 2 bars altos and tenors
page 42 bottom line basses
page 46 bottom line basses
page 47 bottom line tenors and basses
page 49 bottom line tenors and basses
page 50 - 51 - tutti !
5 - page 54 - bottom line basses
page 55 - top line basses
page 56-57 - tenors and basses
page 59 - letter G basses
page 62 - 63 - tutti
6 – page 69 - middle line basses
7 – page 75 - last bar basses
page 79 - middle line sops and altos
page 82 - top line - tutti
You of course may have additional areas of concern ! Tell me next week
or before please.
Your other priority is to sell some tickets so that we have an
audience! If you want a target- how about 3 tickets per member?? Selling
point - all 3 works in the first half feature every year in the Classic FM
top 300 most popular works.
See you all next week in colloquial terms - up for it!!

12th January 2011
A good start to the New Year last week, I thought, with a lot of confident
singing albeit punctuated by some serious black holes ! So next week I
shall start with Rutter working from no.3 to no 7 and revisiting no.1 if
time permits. Must also keep the Barber on the boil - page 9 needs further
dissection. Will you all please make sure you sign the attendance boards
indicating your intention to sing in the concert and also identifying
yourself as a first or second. Thank you.

Next Month!
Congratulations to last night's singers on a successful evening's singing
are in order I think. Some very sensitive singing including excellent
dynamics, good blend and balance from where I was ! Diction and intonation
( particularly in the Berlioz ),I was told afterwards, was also good. The
atmosphere throughout was warm ( I don't just mean the temperature ! ) and
positive. The band were on great form and Ian enhances their performances
- so, well done one and all. On a different subject - thanks to all who
set up at 4p.m and all who helped at the end of the concert. A member of
Elvet staff was duly impressed with our organisation and operating
efficiency. So, a big thank you to you all for the performance and
everything else that contributed to the occasion.
Last week was pretty busy one way and another so I did not get the
opportunity last Wednesday to wish everybody a very happy Christmas and
New Year so I do so now. I
look forward to seeing our carol singers on Tuesday - 6p.m. at Appletree
and 7p.m. for 7.15 at University Hospital.
Reminder - we restart on Jan 5th 2011 - 4 rehearsals left ! A New Year's
resolution ? ! 2011 is going
to be a very special and eventful year as most of you already know - I
hope you all will be part of it and enjoy it. |

Next Month! My thanks to
all those members who were able to attend last Wednesday- a good
,productive rehearsal - significant progress, I felt, particularly with
the Barber. You were obviously itching to get back to grips with the
challenges I have set you for the January concert ! I detected a steely
resolve to achieve - long may it continue because lots of work has yet to
be done to get up to concert standard !
- Next Wednesday - 7.15 - Billingham group rehearsal in the music room
7.30 - first half - Barber ( of course ) Rutter 1,3,5 plus RAFFLE DRAW.
Second half - Xmas concert
- Thursday 7.30 EXTRA rehearsal Elvet Methodist church - Xmas concert
- Friday 10.20 - Billingham carols
- Saturday 4.00 - Elvet Methodist - help with seating please 5.00 -

- Tuesday 22nd 6.00 - Appletree Nursing Home 7.15 - University
hospital - meet in chapel on first floor.
- 2011 Jan.5th - first rehearsal - 4 left ! - please make every effort
to attend all of them ( a New Year's resolution ?)

So...................
My thanks as always for your continued efforts, support and commitment
which are all much appreciated.

Rehearsal on 1st December
2010 - CANCELLED!! - see extra rehearsal, below Accepting that the
whole world is going haywire politically, climate-wise, educationally and
any other you want to add I have provisionally booked Elvet Methodist
church for an extra rehearsal should it be required on Thursday, Dec.
16th. I hope that DCS does its bit to keep us all sane and happy in our
music-making ! Please be advised so that you can plan to be present in
advance. Looking further ahead to the new year we may need to add extra
rehearsals as well so be prepared for those as well. Priorities -
homework, ticket selling, attendance ( weather permitting ).

21/11/2010 |
Rehearsal on 24th November
2010
Firstly, we have received an invitation via Sarah Fawcett, tenor
section leader, to sing carols at an opening event in Billingham on
Friday,Dec.17th ( day before our concert ) at 10.30a.m.The organisation
involved is Housing Hartlepool who are opening a new development of rented
housing in Billingham. The proposed schedule - sing from 10.30 to 11
whilst guests arrive then an interval of 20 mins then maybe sing another
short session. Petrol costs would be provided plus a generous donation to
the Society. I know this will be an impossible/difficult time for many
members but if we can find a group of 20'ish volunteers that would be
sufficient. Don't reply to this if you know you can't do it - if you can
however email me back or sign the list next Wednesday, please.
I've been busy sorting out your voting slips which have been
scrutinised by 2 members. So, the top 5 are all in the green book -
41,Shepherds'Farewell,15 In dulci jubilo,23 2nd version Coventry Carol,16
Infant holy, infant lowly and 33 See amid the winter's snow. So we shall
rehearse these 5 plus number 2 of the Rutter Magnificat for our 2 spots in
the programme.
Great to have so many members involved in voting - 88 in all. All the
carols we went through attracted at least 4 votes each. Regarding the
charity vote 53 members nominated 27 different charities .As you will know
the N.E. Air Ambulance will be our chosen charity this year, highly
appropriate I think and one to which we haven't previously donated to. So,
thanks to all who took part in the above .
Rehearsal schedule - first half - Rutter 5,6 and 7 plus Barber. Second
half - carols as above, Sparke English Christmas, Zadok the Priest,
Hallelujah Chorus.
Suggest you hang on to the orange carol book for the moment as Harry,
our librarian, is currently away.

15/11/2010 |
Rehearsal on 17th November
2010
Like yesterday's performance by the English rugby team I thought last
week's rehearsal was a significant advance with confidence beginning to
manifest itself in both the Barber and the Rutter.
Reminder to my soprano C flat squad - quick session at 7.20 in the
music room, please.
In the first half we shall work on the Barber hopefully sorting out the
remaining black spots and then working on numbers 5,6 and 7 of the Rutter.
Please note that this week marks the start of rehearsals for the
Christmas concert in the second half of the evening. So, you need carols
for Choirs 1 and 2 and the rest of the Xmas music plus a pencil because
you will be choosing carols and a charity (on a voting slip to save time)
for any balance left over after expenses have been met.

8/11/2010 |
Rehearsal on 10th November
2010
A good session last week , I
thought, after the long half-term break. So, this week I intend to cover
the following but not necessarily in this order ! Rutter - 1,2 ,4,5.
Barber - concentrating again 0n pages 7 -.10 but singing through the whole
piece as well. Parry - sing through at end if time
N.B. Sopranos - please make sure first
sops are in the outside 3 seats only and seconds inside 3 seats only. We
are now almost in a position where we know the numbers in each section - I
want to see what it looks like.
Barber Soprano top C flat squad - can we
have a brief rehearsal next week i.e. 17th at 7.20p.m. in the music room.
Please confirm or otherwise with me this week.
Carol concert - you may have picked up
that our concert clashes with a similar one by the cathedral choir so we
need to get our tickets sold first !
|
11/10/2010 |
Rehearsal on 3rd November
2010
Next week I intend to start with
Parry, work on the 2nd half of Barber (page 7 onwards) concentrating on
page 9 and finish with Rutter, working backwards from number 7.
Just in case you missed my plans
up to Christmas - I intend starting work on the Christmas concert on Nov.
17th.As in previous years I will work on the January concert in the first
half and the Christmas concert in the second half. On the 17th we shall
select together the carols we would like to sing this year. Other music
you will need - Zadok the Priest, Hallelujah chorus, Sparke An
English Christmas plus of course carols for Choirs 1 and 2 .Harry, our
librarian, will be issuing these in early November.
The Christmas concert is on
Saturday Dec. 18th in Elvet Methodist Church at 7.30p.m. Choir rehearsal
will be at 5.00 followed by rehearsal with band at 6.00p.m.
These details will be on display each Wednesday rehearsal.
Looking forward to getting on with
all the above challenges!
|
11/10/2010 |
Rehearsal on 13th October
2010
Sorry for a late bulletin this week.
Have thanked George for working you so well last week - he enjoyed the
challenge !
This week I intend to start with Rutter
- starting with number 1,then 2 ,3 and then concentrating on 5 which I
think is the most challenging before moving on to 6 and 7.At some point I
shall want to swap over to look at Barber pages 7-10. Look forward to
seeing you all on Wednesday.
|
26/09/2010 |
Rehearsal on 29th September
2010
Significant progress made last week -
you all worked hard ! But still a long way to go. This week I shall warm
up with the Parry as usual, then concentrate on the last 3 pages of the
Barber. I shall then attempt to get through 5, 6, and 7 of the Rutter
although that may prove to be a bridge too far - we shall see.
At halftime I intend to rehearse the
missing 2 soprano notes of the Barber ( bottom of page 3 ) in the music
room - if you wish to be considered please come along. At present I have
had 2 offers and 2 possibles ! I believe I need a max. of 6. Look forward
to seeing you on Wednesday, |
18/09/2010 |
Rehearsal on 22nd September
2010
Another encouraging rehearsal last week,
I thought, with more new members joining us. Apparently there were over
120 members present. The air conditioning was better but not yet quite
where we want it to be -although I get the impression that whatever we do
will not suit everybody! C'est la vie.
Next Wednesday I shall start with Parry
again - then work on the Barber, concentrating on the section starting at
figure 3 up to the first bar on page 10 - tempo 1. Rutter: I shall work on
numbers 3, 4 and hopefully 5 if there is time. |
11/09/2010 |
Rehearsal on 15th September
2010
Here we go again ! This season will
include the challenge of works new to the society and composers new to the
society - I hope all of you will enjoy the challenge and enjoyment that
they will give you ! Always a relief to see a choir reassemble again last
week -one never knows. An encouraging start,I thought, allowing for the
problems with the air conditioning which we WILL get sorted sooner rather
than later I hope - such is progress - when I think back to some our
rehearsal venues in the past we are very lucky to have our present
facility ! My thanks to Harry Morgan and his team for their splendid
achievement in issuing music out so quickly and efficiently last week -
they ensured we had an early start and we were able to have a look at all
3 works and to Cathy Tarn for welcoming our 9 new members.
Tackling the Barber and getting through
to the end was no mean achievement.
Next week - I intend to start with Parry
- work at the Barber at least as far as figure 2 and maybe beyond to
figure 3 but no further.Rutter I intend to start at the beginning but also
look at number 2 and 3.
123 sing ! I mentioned this last week -
I feel we ought to be involved but time is short.I do have some ideas of
what, where and when we could sing but it does depend on how many of you
would be prepared to turn out - it could get us some much needed publicity
at the same time as collecting for charity. If you don't know what I'm
talking about visit www.classicfm.co.uk/123sing for more details.I shall
propose my ideas next week.

POST Rehearsal on 19th May 2010
AND Concert
R
Geneva - a
great success for all I believe - we were all very well looked after and
made welcome, not least our contribution to the concert which was well
received by a large audience. Geneva cathedral is easier to sing in than
Durham being smaller and having no tower! My thanks to all those members
who did the liaising before we went.
Last season -
frightening to me how quickly it went - apparently this is what happens
when you get to my age! For me our 2 main concerts were both memorable for
the right reasons -some beautiful and sensitive singing contrasted with
robust 'nautical' power at times when needed, wonderful soloists (we are
trying to get Katharine Fuge back for next season), splendid orchestra and
your smiling faces ( when I could catch them) .I do hope you enjoyed the
season as much as I did . My thanks to you all for your efforts and
commitment - special thanks to the committee, Tom and Edward, section
leaders and Rupert for our new website. As always at the end of a season
we say goodbye to some and 'au revoir' to others. This year however
we are losing 2 possibly 4 tenors, so your summer task is to go out to
find and grab a tenor, please!
Next season -
starts on Sept.8th. - included in our 2 main concerts are 3 new composers
-Albinoni, Michael Haydn, Samuel Barber - 5 new works not previously sung
by the society - Parry I was glad, Barber Agnus Dei, Rutter Magnificat,
Albinoni Magnificat, M.Haydn Requiem. Lots of challenges there!
Enjoy your summer break - grab a tenor and see you in September.

Meet in the

achieved my target of 4. Looking forward to an enjoyable weekend's
musicmaking. Hope you are too.
|
2/05/2010 |
Rehearsal on 12th May 2010
Last week's rehearsal was very encouraging - improved attacks, words
beginning to come through more positively, faces I haven't seen since
January began to appear! All signs of confidence beginning to show its
face and the music sounding close to what I want. So, 2 Wednesdays left to
build on last week's improvements - unlike the current political situation
the future looks good! So, please make every effort to attend all the
remaining Wednesday rehearsals, and particularly the ones on the Friday
night and Saturday afternoon of the concert weekend.. Apparently there are
still 5 members who have still to indicate whether or not they are singing
in the concert, 2 altos,1 tenor and 2 basses - please will you oblige
a.s.a.p. so that we can finalise the seating plan! We have a wonderful
concert of classical music to look forward to so please do your bit to
sell tickets - you deserve a good audience to appreciate our efforts over
the past few months !
|
2/05/2010 |
Rehearsal on 5th May 2010
Another
hard, but productive session last week, I thought - still some black holes
to plug - but not as big as those across the pond - what a disaster - what
are we doing to our planet? But to our concert - tickets need
selling please - homework needs to be completed on the dodgy sections- 15
members need to signify their intention to sing in the concert or not -
this is most important so that we can do a seating plan now rather than
later.
Music
- Haydn progressing satisfactorily - Mozart - I intend to work on as much
as I can but concentrating on the two 8-part sections and the Cum Sancto
Spiritu.!
|
25/04/2010 |
Rehearsal on 28th April 2010
A
good session last week I thought with significant progress! The 8 part
sections still need some work before we are where I want us to be - i.e.
totally in control! So, this week we shall start with Haydn but at a
slightly slower tempo to allow us to deal with the unfamiliar words more
comfortably. Then onto Mozart attacking all the 4 and 5 part
sections but, hopefully, having time to look at the Osanna as well.
Pencils at the ready, please, for adding various reminders on how I want
the music to sound - there is a lot so you do need to mark your copies. As
you sign in there should be a column to sign up for the concert - please
do so that we can sort out the seating. Basses - your seating bears no
resemblance to the cathedral; can we sort this out this week please so
that at least we have an approximation for where you will be for the
concert!
Thanks
again to Janet for organising the annual dinner which was again such a
delightful, enjoyable and relaxed evening enhanced by her own unique
entertainment !
You
may be interested - Classic FM - this Tuesday 9.p.m. a special programme -
Allegri Miserere-one that I've never managed to tackle but what a piece !
VW Serenade to Music - Elgar Musicmakers ( I have this pencilled in as my
swansong for May 2012 ), Tallis Spem in alium - another one that I've not
got under my belt but it is in 40 parts !!
|
18/04/2010 |
Rehearsal on 21st April 2010
5
rehearsals left ! So, this week I intend to start with Haydn and then move
on to the 8 part sections again because ,I hope you will agree, they need
the most work. I also want to look at the Credo this week. Tenors and
basses will you stick with the same formation as last week, please. We need
another session before making our minds up.
Reminder
no.1 -Don't forget your pencil!
Reminder
no.2 - don't forget about selling tickets
|
11/04/2010 |
Rehearsal on 14th April 2010
I
hope that you all have enjoyed your Easter break. So now down to the
business of preparing for our next concert. I intend to start with Haydn
and then move on to Mozart concentrating on the 8 part sections.
Tenors and basses: I would like you to sit as we ended the last
rehearsal i.e. firsts on my left and seconds on my right. We shall then
assess at the end of the evening whether or not there is a perceived
improvement. If not we shall revert to our old seating - I hope this will
meet with everybody's approval!
Tickets
- a timely reminder please - if you want a target if each member can
sell 4 that will be brilliant.
Timely
reminder number 2 - attendance - please make every effort to attend all
our remaining rehearsals. I want to see a "sea" of confident
faces on May 23rd which will reassure me that you know your part
completely!
|
28/03/2010 |
Rehearsal on 31st March 2010
This week I
propose to sing right through the concert programme starting with the
Haydn, which we haven't sung for a while. Then on to the Mozart finishing
with the grand finale - what you've all been waiting for - the Easter
raffle. My thanks to Janet for all her efforts yet again and to all those
who have donated prizes. Progress last week I felt was steady rather than
spectacular - we still have a number of black holes regarding notes but we
must now move on to include turning our efforts into music.I am looking
forward to an ever increasing number of heads raised and watching,
confirming to me that you know what you are singing ! What a difference
that will make to our performance ! So, pencils at the ready, please.!
Reminder - no rehearsal on April 7th - back on the 14th.
|
21/03/2010 |
Rehearsal on 24th March 2010
This week will
( Probably ! ) be the last split rehearsal unless everything goes
completely pear shaped ! I hope you all have found them both helpful and
time saving. My thanks to Jean and Edward for helping out. So, the first
choir will be in the main hall and the second choir in the music room i.e.
as last week. The emphasis will still be on note-bashing but, hopefully,
future rehearsals can concentrate on the finer points of Mozart's
masterpiece. If you have particular concerns about notes this week is the
time to raise them, please. For those of you who are going to Geneva I
have received some notes from Peter the conductor on tempi and
interpretation which we will get photcopied and issued a.s.a.p. On
occasion we may well sing at Geneva tempi - it will do us all no harm -
there won't be that much difference I suspect. I hope last week's lost
property has turned up - a timely reminder to us all to check all our
chattels before going home at the end of a rehearsal.
|
07/03/2010 |
Rehearsal on 10th March 2010
Reminder: we
shall start with a split rehearsal - second choir in the main hall and
first choir in the music room. We shall look at the Qui Tollis first to go
over any outstanding hot points before moving on to work on the Osanna. In
the second half we shall put the above together and, if any time remains,
run through the Credo and Cum Sancto Spiritu. Hope to see you all on
Wednesday,
|
28/02/2010 |
Rehearsal on 3rd March 2010 This
week's rehearsal will be normal i.e.not split as last week. We shall keep
the Qui Tollis on the boil to identify continuing hotspots but mainly
concentrate on the 2 big choruses - Cum Sancto Spiritu and the Credo. Our
seating seemed to go a bit awry after the split rehearsal last week so we
need to sort that out. Student Conductors Workshop - second rehearsal at
halftime in the music room please.
|
21/02/2010 |
Student Conductor Workshop and Rehearsal on 24th February
2010
-
Student
Conductor workshop Monday March 8th So that we are prepared (unlike
last year !) I propose to hold 2 short rehearsals during halftime
starting this week - Wednesday's rehearsal will be in the music room.
There are a few places left, preference to sopranos !
-
Reminder
This week choir 1 will be in the music room and choir 2 in the main
hall for the first half of Wednesday's rehearsal. We shall concentrate
on the 'Qui Tollis' but move on 'Osanna' if time
|
|
14/02/2010
|
Rehearsal on 17th February
2010: Two Reminders
No
rehearsal this week. When we return on the 24th.first choir will be in the
music room and second choir in the main hall for the first half of the
rehearsal. We shall tackle the Qui Tollis first and move on to the Osanna
if time permits.

URGENT: Change of Venue for
10th February 2010
Due
to circumstances beyond their control, the Durham Johnston
school have just informed me that the
school will be closed next Wednesday night. The good news is that I have
been able to get Elvet Methodist church despite the short notice so that's
where we will be next Wednesday. If you know anyone who doesn't receive my
emails can you please warn them a.s.a.p. For the record, we shall probably
rehearse the 4 and 5 part choruses but I might let you all sight-read
through the 8 part bits so you know what to expect!

This Week Plus...
I don't know
about you but the Sea Symphony is still swimming around in my mind ! As we
have come to expect the cathedral takes over the music and sends it into a
higher sphere of awe and appreciation and last week was no exception. But
we have to move on and get our feet back on the ground !
A very
encouraging first rehearsal last week , I felt, with the Haydn being well
received. The Mozart tested us, as I knew it would, but to conclude
the evening by singing through the Cum Sanctus fugue without much problem
and fuss was a significant achievement.
This week we do
have to sort out the choir into 2 equally sized choirs - as I explained
last week for those who weren't there - NOT a first choir and second choir
but 2 equal choirs. Please be prepared to be flexible !

The Concert Plus...
For me the 2
extra rehearsals have been very worthwhile - a lot of ground covered and
progress made - I hope you feel the same ! We shall find out tomorrow
night exactly how prepared we are for the weekend ahead. My thanks
to all those members who were able to attend one or both of those
rehearsals. Tomorrow night we shall sing right through the programme,
stopping where necessary - please shout out sections you want to look at
again as we progress.
Tickets
- can we make a final effort to get more tickets sold, please. This is a
big concert and therefore an expensive one ! Look forward to seeing you
all tomorrow night for the final push !

Concert Issues
It was very
gratifying and reassuring to see so many members last night. There was
also a steely resolve to get your heads down (which of course is exactly
what I DON'T want!), and get on top of the music. I know some
members were unable to get because of the weather conditions but hopefully
things are slowly improving.
For those
absentees last night please be aware we have scheduled 2 extra rehearsals
in Elvet Methodist church at 7.30 tomorrow ( Friday) and next Monday, same
time. I intend to concentrate on the 3rd and 4th. movements tomorrow
and the first 2 movements on Monday and, hopefully, briefly look at the
Serenade as well.
Timings next
weekend.

Friday -
cathedral - 7.30p.m. Please assemble in the nave and wait to be
brought forward to the stage.

Wednesday. I look forward to seeing you - and hearing you - in great
voice at the remaining rehearsals. |

Next Week (15/01/2010)
Perhaps in
retrospect I should have chosen VW's Sinfonia Antarctica rather then the
Sea Symphony this season! However, seriously - weather permitting -
we shall meet next Wednesday. I shall send out an email at
6.00p.m.on Wednesday to inform you whether or not the rehearsal is on. If
you know members who do not receive my emails they should either contact
you or ring me on 01913861839 or Alison Curry on 01913845822 before
6.30p.m. if they are not sure about conditions. Should conditions not
improve, I have already acquired provisional booking at Elvet Methodist
for additional rehearsals on Friday 15th,Monday 18th and Thursday 21st as
a safeguard.
If you don't
have a recording of the Sea Symphony and missed last Wednesday's
performance remember you can still pick it up on www.bbc.radio3 Classical
Collection until next Tuesday.
Problems/queries
etc. I'm here ! |

URGENT: Cancellation
Tonight's
rehearsal has had to be cancelled. Sorry for this late notice - I'd
thought we might be able to meet but traffic problems on the approach
roads to Durham have escalated in the last half hour so reluctantly, but
rightly I feel, I've decided we must cancel. Hope to see you all next week
in good voice ! |
