The Verdi Requiem was a TRIUMPH!  Thunderous choral music, exquisite solo work, a thumping good orchestra, and the spiritual agony of the agnostic displayed to the world

[Testimonial from a past Member]

I have had a wonderful 18 years as a member of the choir - it has been a real joy to sing such a wide repertoire with you - thank you for that and thank you to all my fellow choir members who have been so kind and supportive in recent years. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Celebrating Fifty Golden Years

Durham Choral Society is 50 years old (young?!) in 2012.  In that time, we have:
  • Enjoyed the services of some magnificent Musical Directors, including founder, Maurice Armsby, a Cathedral lay clerk, Raymond Hall, Principal of the Bernard Gilpin Society, and, above all, our current Musical Director, Richard Brice.
  • Sung a multitude of magnificent works, including: Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Vivaldi's Gloria, Benjamin Britten's St Nicholas, Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man, Rutter's Gloria and Requiem, Bach's Magnificat, Fauré's Requiem, Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, Haydn's Creation, Handel's Messiah, Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens, Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music - and so many more.
  • Presented concerts with the best of local, national and internationally known soloists, including among others Sheila Armstrong, Jill Gomez, Thomas Allan, Ian Bostridge and Katharine Fuge.
  • Commissioned and sung original works, including: Will Todd's Gala and Gloria, about the miners and people of Durham, praising God.
  • Helped to develop up-and-coming young artists; we ended the 2009 season with a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria and Britten's St. Nicholas, featuring one of the trebles from the Cathedral choir singing the young Nicholas.
  • Introduced hundreds, if not thousands of people to the joys (and tears!) of choral singing and provided a fulfilling outlet for so many people's musical talents
